Interview

Host: Hello and welcome to the “Finish Strong” podcast, where we help you become a finisher, not just a starter. I’m your host and today we’ll be discussing the importance of developing a finisher mindset and tips for achieving your goals.

Host: Joining us today is John Smith, a motivational speaker and author of the book “Finish Strong.” John, thanks for joining us.

John: Thank you for having me, it’s great to be here.

Host: So John, let’s start by discussing what it means to be a finisher. Can you explain this concept to our listeners?

John: Of course. Being a finisher means having the mindset and determination to follow through with a task or goal until completion, even when faced with obstacles or challenges. It’s about staying focused on the end result and not giving up until you’ve achieved it.

Host: That’s a great explanation. So how can someone develop this mindset and become a finisher?

John: There are a few key things someone can do to develop a finisher mindset. First, it’s important to set realistic and specific goals. This gives you a clear target to work towards and makes it easier to stay motivated. Second, it’s important to break down larger goals into smaller, more manageable tasks. This makes the goal less overwhelming and allows you to make progress step by step. And finally, it’s important to hold yourself accountable and track your progress along the way.

Host: Those are all great tips. What are some common obstacles that prevent people from becoming finishers?

John: One of the biggest obstacles is fear of failure. People often worry that they won’t be able to achieve their goal or that they’ll make mistakes along the way. Another common obstacle is lack of motivation, especially when the goal is something that takes a long time to achieve. And finally, distractions and competing priorities can make it difficult to stay focused on the task at hand.

Host: How can someone stay motivated and focused on their goal when faced with these obstacles?

John: There are a few things someone can do to stay motivated. One is to remind themselves of why they set the goal in the first place and what they stand to gain by achieving it. Another is to find a support system, whether it’s friends, family, or a coach or mentor, who can help keep them accountable and motivated. And finally, it’s important to take breaks and practice self-care to avoid burnout.

Host: That’s all great advice. Now, let’s shift gears a bit. Can you share an example of a time when you struggled to finish something and how you overcame that challenge?

John: Sure. When I was writing my book, I hit a wall about halfway through and struggled to make progress. I was overwhelmed by the amount of work left to do and was worried that the book wouldn’t be well-received. To overcome this, I reminded myself of why I was writing the book and how it could help others. I also broke down the remaining work into smaller, more manageable tasks and enlisted the help of a friend to keep me accountable. And finally, I celebrated small milestones along the way to stay motivated.

Host: That’s a great example of how someone can overcome challenges and become a finisher. So John, any final thoughts or tips for our listeners who want to become finishers?

John: I would just say to remember that becoming a finisher is a mindset that can be developed with practice and persistence. Don’t be discouraged by setbacks or challenges, and remember to celebrate small wins along the way. And finally, hold yourself accountable and track your progress to stay motivated.

Host: Those are all great tips. Thanks so much for joining us today,
